Postdoctoral researcher in ice sheet modellingAbout usThe Department of Climate is part of the NORCE Climate and Environment Division, which has around 200 employees. It conducts basic and applied research on the climate system on various temporal and spatial scales, on paleo climate, anthropogenic climate change and its impact on societies, as well as on the feasibility of climate change mitigation options.NORCE is one of the four founding partners of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), which is the largest climate research center in Scandinavia and recognized as one of leading climate centers in Europe. The postdoctoral position will be affiliated with the BCCR, which provides a lively and stimulating international work environment. At NORCE we are interested to recruit excellent researchers for permanent positions. If during this postdoctoral project we see a good fit, we can work towards a permanent researcher position for the successful candidate. For this, acquiring external project funding is essential, and we encourage and support the proposal writing process.About the projectThe Department of Climate at NORCE has a full-time postdoctoral researcher position in ice sheet modelling available that is closely connected to the international Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project ISMIP7. The position is for a fixed-term of 3 years. The main working place is in Bergen, Norway.Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project 7 (ISMIP7)The position is part of the international community effort ISMIP7 (https://www.ismip.org/) which is currently developing the protocol for the next generation of ice sheet projections. The goal is to provide sea-level change contributions from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and associated uncertainties that will inform the next report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).About the positionThe overall aim of this postdoctoral project is to guide and support the next generation of ISMIP Greenland ice sheet projections in close collaboration with other international ISMIP partners. The postdoctoral researcher will i) implement and test the ISMIP7 experimental protocols for forcing the Greenland ice sheet with atmospheric and oceanic boundary conditions with one ice sheet model (Community Ice Sheet Model, CISM) ahead of general application by the wider modelling groups; ii) interact with the ISMIP7 forcing focus groups to further improve the protocols if needed; iii) guide the ice sheet modelling groups with support and advice in terms of protocol implementation and data handling; iv) contribute to the intercomparison with simulations and outputs of one model (CISM); v) collect, organize and quality check output data from the participating modelling groups; vi) perform the analysis of the ensemble projections and discuss, publish and disseminate the results.Education requirements:The successful candidate must have a PhD in climate science, Earth system science, physics, or a similar field.Qualifications, skills and abilities:
  • Experience in ice sheet modelling is required.
  • Experience in working with Linux/Unix environments and with high level programming languages (e.g. FORTRAN, Python) is required.
  • A strong background and experience in operating, analysing and visualising large datasets is desired.
  • Track record of peer reviewed publications in high level international journals.
