The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.The Department of Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering (MEK) at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD), Oslo Metropolitan University, has a vacant PhD Fellowship position in the field of wind-assisted propulsion. The department is a partner in the WINTEGRATE (WIND+INTEGRATE) project, a large collaborative research and innovation project funded under the Green Platform programme, which is jointly supported by the Research Council of Norway, Innovation Norway, and SIVA. The programme aims to accelerate the green transition in Norwegian industry by supporting research and innovation projects that develop sustainable technologies and solutions with significant climate and environmental impact.The PhD candidate will be part of the department’s research activities at OsloMet OceanLab, contributing to research on data-driven methods for sustainable maritime operations. The work will focus on voyage optimization, operational decision support, and control strategies for ships equipped with wind-assisted propulsion systems. Using operational data from vessels participating in the WINTEGRATE project, the candidate will contribute to the development of methods that support energy-efficient ship operation and the decarbonization of maritime transport, thereby supporting the broader green transition of the maritime sector. The duration of the position is 3 years.Your main duties and areas of responsibilityThis PhD project addresses data analytics and optimization for routing and control of wind-assisted ships and is part of the WINTEGRATE (WIND+INTEGRATE) project, which aims to accelerate maritime decarbonization through the integration of wind propulsion systems with onboard ship systems. The project focuses on developing computational methods that improve the operational efficiency of ships equipped with wind-assisted propulsion.The PhD candidate will work with full-scale operational data collected from two ships equipped with wind propulsion systems, which act as floating laboratories in the project. The research will involve processing and analyzing large volumes of operational data from onboard systems, including propulsion, navigation, environmental sensors, and wind propulsion devices.The work will focus on data-driven modelling, routing optimization, and control strategies for wind-assisted vessels. Relevant research topics include voyage optimization under environmental uncertainty, operational decision support, and the development of optimization and control methods for efficient ship operation. The project may also include advanced approaches such as model predictive control, optimization-based decision frameworks, and data-driven performance modelling.The overall goal is to develop computational methods that enable efficient and intelligent operation of wind-assisted ships, contributing to reduced fuel consumption and emissions in maritime transport.As a PhD Fellow at OsloMet, you have the opportunity to .Qualification requirements
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, marine engineering, cybernetics, control engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, marine technology, or equivalent related disciplines. The degree must normally include 120 credits (ECTS). If the master’s degree includes fewer than 120 ECTS credits, the applicant must, by the application deadline, submit documentation confirming that the master’s degree qualifies for admission to doctoral studies in the country where it was awarded. All exams for the master's degree must be completed by 30 June 2026.

  • Minimum average grade B on subjects included in the master's degree.
  • Minimum grade B on the master's thesis.

  • Documented background in areas relevant to data analytics, optimization, and control of maritime systems.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: data analysis and data processing, optimization methods, voyage or route optimization, control systems, model predictive control, maritime systems, or modelling and simulation of complex engineering systems.
  • Strong programming skills and a solid foundation in mathematics, and dynamical systems.

The salary for the position is in accordance with the Basic Collective Agreement for state employees and OsloMets pay policy for PhD Candidate in code 1017, corresponding to 550 800 NOK per year.
