As a PhD Candidate with us within the Phytoplankton Ecology and Ocean Colour research group (Associate professor Pauliina Salmi) of the Marine Sciences division of NTNU's Department of Biology, you will work in an interdisciplinary team of marine biologists and cybernetics engineers to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.The immediate leader for the position will be the Head of Department of Biology.About the projectThe goal for this position is to complete a doctoral degree in Biology at NTNU on the topic of spectroscopic remote sensing of ocean colour. The candidate will work with existing observations, from platforms as distant as satellites down to the water's surface, to characterize how subtle spectral patterns can reveal the health and dynamics of planktonic ecosystems. The candidate will also have the opportunity to collect more data to further test the power of their methodological developments. The PhD project will be associated with the HYPSO -satellite programme of NTNU and international collaboration with the Earth and Planetary Research Group (University of Stirling, Scotland) and Finnish Environment Institute (Finland). The work is also linked to activities of the Freshwater Research Group of NTNU, and the thematic research area of Observation Pyramid. Therefore, there is an opportunity to work together with a larger group of researchers.The desired starting date is as soon as possible, and no later than 1.11.2026.Duties of the position
  • Complete doctoral education in four years' time, including one year of teaching and 6 months of course work
  • Write 2-3 academic publications or manuscripts for peer-reviewed scientific journal
  • Write and defend a PhD thesis
  • Participate actively in the Phytoplankton Ecology and SmallSatLab research groups
  • Attend international activities such as conferences
  • Contribute to relevant courses, such as BI3070 Enabling Technologies in Marine Science
  • (optional) supervision of master's students on topics that support the PhD candidate's research
Required selection criteria
  • You must have a relevant Master's degree in natural, environmental or computational sciences, such as remote sensing, marine biology, aquatic sciences or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to
